Use of Biotechnology in Agriculture and its Benefits

Biotechnology is the application of scientific techniques to modify and improve plants, animal and microorganisms to enhance their value. Agricultural biotechnology is the area of f biotechnology involving application to agriculture. Agricultural biotechnology has been practiced for a long time, as people have sought to improve agriculturally important organisms by selection and breeding. An example of traditional agricultural biotechnology is the development of disease-resistant wheat varieties by cross-breeding different wheat types until the desired disease resistance was present in a resulting new variety.

Bioinformatics Specialist

Bioinformatics is combining biology and computers. Data derived from various studies (DNA associated experiments, for example) is gathered in the computers. Software is in charge for data organization, manipulation and final analysis. Data mining is useful way to collect lot of publically available and jet relevant data that could be used in different experimental stages (for comparison or quick information extraction) or to help merge data from different sources. Programming skills are necessary for software and database manufacture and maintenance.

Forensic DNA Analyst

DNA analysts often work in forensic crime labs where they examine samples of DNA to identify potential suspects. After conducting tests on each sample, analysts compare the identity of the sample with other known samples. If they can find a match on the system of known suspects, they can provide law enforcement agents with a positive identification. Some analysts work in privately owned forensic laboratories, where as others work in police station crime labs.
Analysts spend most of their time in the laboratory cataloguing and analyzing DNA evidence. Since the findings from the analysis can be used in court to prove the innocence or guilt of suspects, analysts must follow strict protocols regarding the custody of evidence, testing procedures and reporting guidelines. Every step of the procedure must be notated and reported, which includes when the sample was received, the quality of the sample, the tests performed and their results. Analysts are often called to appear in court as expert witnesses to verify the findings of a particular DNA analysis.

Greenhouse and Field Technician

These positions are for people who like to work with plants, enjoy being more outdoors, but also like to understand science.  They care for plants that have been created through genetic engineering and have to understand how to plant seeds, pollinate flowers, water and weed plant beds, plant rooted plants, nuture root cuttings, treat plants for disease and pest infestation, and be able to use a computer for documentation purposes. They can work in a greenhouse and or out in the fields and may need experience with farm equipment. Employers hire people with two year degrees in plant science, crop science or botany, or four year people with degrees in agriculture, agromony, plant science, biology or botany.

Clinical Research Associate:

A clinical research associate (CRA), also called a clinical monitor or trial monitor, is a health-care professional who performs many activities related to medical research, particularly clinical trials. Clinical research associates work in various settings, such as pharmaceutical companies, medical research institutes and government agencies.[1][2]Depending on the jurisdiction, different education and certification requirements may be necessary to practice as a clinical research associate.

The main tasks of the CRA are defined by good clinical practice guidelines for monitoring clinical trials, such as those elaborated by the International Conference on Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Registration of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH).

Laboratory Assistant

Biotechnology Laboratory Assistants work under the supervision and direction of a scientist or researcher who typically designs and controls the experiments or research. The laboratory assistant will work with glass washers to insure that all the equipment needed for an experiment is clean and ready. The assistant will typically set up the equipment needed for the experiment according to the direction of the scientist. Once the experiment or research has been started, the assistant will monitor the experiment and do a variety of tasks needed to keep the experiment going. For example, the Biotechnology Laboratory Assistant, may need to add chemicals to a flask to keep an experiment running. The assistant will also take notes and record observations that will be used later. Once an experiment is finished, the Biotechnology Laboratory Assistant is responsible for putting away research equipment and materials. They may also work with the scientist to write reports, summaries and protocols regarding experiments. A Biotechnology Laboratory Assistant also performs limited troubleshooting and calibration of instruments.
