Laboratory Assistant

Biotechnology Laboratory Assistants work under the supervision and direction of a scientist or researcher who typically designs and controls the experiments or research. The laboratory assistant will work with glass washers to insure that all the equipment needed for an experiment is clean and ready. The assistant will typically set up the equipment needed for the experiment according to the direction of the scientist. Once the experiment or research has been started, the assistant will monitor the experiment and do a variety of tasks needed to keep the experiment going. For example, the Biotechnology Laboratory Assistant, may need to add chemicals to a flask to keep an experiment running. The assistant will also take notes and record observations that will be used later. Once an experiment is finished, the Biotechnology Laboratory Assistant is responsible for putting away research equipment and materials. They may also work with the scientist to write reports, summaries and protocols regarding experiments. A Biotechnology Laboratory Assistant also performs limited troubleshooting and calibration of instruments.
